Food Deserts
Exhibit Book:
Social Design, 2024
Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Blender
I focused on the social issue of food deserts due to growing up in Chicago where disparities in income and access lead to hardships in acquiring affordable and nutritious food. A 2D clock was to be a visual interpretation of the social issue. It must conceptually connect to time without numbers while including one word relating to the content. Then, this 2D clock was to be translated into 3D. A third of the clock is black to tie into the 2018 study that shows while only a third of Chicago’s population is African American, almost 80% of African Americans live in deserts. The scale and number of carts show the disproportionate number of grocery stores in neighborhoods based on race. This design was translated to a wooden 2D clock with a green Monopoly house to showcase finances in food deserts.
Then, the topic was translated into an exhibit design to inform of the most important aspects without overloading too many facts. Information was placed with consideration of remaining readable within realistic physical heights. The exhibit was rendered using Blender.
Finally, an exhibit book was created to educate about the social issue and walk through various projects and processes throughout senior year.
